The three sisters identified in reports on the Kano boat accident

Three sisters have died after a canoe capsized at Tiga Dam in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State.

The victims were identified in reports as Murjanatu, Atikatu and Bilkisu, also known as Amira. They were from the Yalwan Rugu-Rugu community.

The accident happened on Saturday afternoon as the sisters were travelling by canoe on the dam. Premium Times reported that the local government chairperson, Sa’adatu Salisu, said the incident occurred around 2 p.m.

Punch reported that the sisters’ father, Khalid Aliyu, said he was not at home when the accident happened and only received the news after people rushed in to tell him. Daily Trust also carried the family’s account of the accident and the grief in the community.

Boat and canoe accidents are common in riverine and dam-side communities during the rainy season, especially where residents rely on small vessels for daily movement. Local authorities have repeatedly urged passengers and operators to use safety gear, but enforcement is often weak outside major routes.
