NaijaTrend explainsState police: what the amendment means and when anything changesWhat it means for you

The Kano State House of Assembly has approved a proposed constitutional amendment to allow state police, following consideration of the bill at Tuesday’s plenary.

House Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala said lawmakers adopted amendments made by the House of Representatives to facilitate state police across the country.

The proposal seeks a legal framework for state governments to establish and operate their own police services. The vote is part of the constitutional review process, not an announcement that a new force has begun operating.

Channels Television reported that lawmakers examined all 26 clauses before approving the bill at third reading, after consideration by the Committee of the Whole.

The Assembly had earlier planned a second reading for 12 October, after circulating copies to members for review. The latest vote advances the proposal beyond that earlier stage.

The reports do not give a start date for a state police service.
