Tension Rises as Falana-Led June 12 Protest Encounters Counter-Rally in Lagos
Tension rose at the June 12 protest in Lagos on Friday after supporters and counter-protesters converged under the Ikeja Bridge, forcing police to intervene to prevent a breakdown of order during the Democracy Day demonstration.
Premium Times reported that the protest, led by human rights lawyer Femi Falana alongside Falz and several civil society groups, was aimed at drawing attention to insecurity in states including Oyo, Zamfara and Kebbi, as well as repeated abductions in parts of the country. Falana said the demonstration was planned to coincide with Democracy Day.
According to the report, the counter-rally at the same venue created a tense standoff, with police stepping in to separate the two groups. Channels TV and Daily Post also covered the protest and counter-rally.
For the organisers, the protest was part of a wider push to keep insecurity in the national conversation, while the counter-rally signalled the kind of political pushback that has followed earlier demonstrations against hardship. The police presence under the bridge showed how fragile crowd control became when two opposing groups occupied the same space.
The events of June 12 now extend beyond the Democracy Day commemorations into a live contest of voices on the streets, with the protest and counter-rally giving the security crisis a fresh, visible moment.
