Super Eagles Held to 2-2 Draw by Poland in Warsaw Friendly; Late Equaliser Denies Nigeria Victory
The Super Eagles were held to a 2-2 draw by Poland in an international friendly at the Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw, with a late equaliser denying Nigeria victory in the first of two European warm-up matches.
Nigeria started brightly and took the lead in the 25th minute when Moses Simon set up Terem Moffi for the opening goal. The flag went up for offside initially, but after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the goal was confirmed.
The Eagles held the lead until the final minutes of the first half, when Poland levelled before the break.
Second Half Drama
A flurry of changes by coach Eric Chelle disrupted Nigeria’s rhythm early in the second half, but the team soon regained control. After another VAR review, Nigeria got a penalty, which Paul Onuachu slotted home to restore the lead.
Then, with virtually the last kick of the game, Poland struck back with a long-range effort that left goalkeeper Maduka Okoye stranded, levelling the tie at 2-2.
Chelle’s Assessment
Speaking after the match, Chelle said: “I’m proud of the fight we showed. Coming from behind twice and then conceding late is disappointing, but the response was excellent. Moffi and Onuachu were clinical. We’ll tighten up defensively and move forward.”
The match was part of the Super Eagles’ preparation camp in London ahead of the Unity Cup opener against Jamaica. The Eagles now travel to London to continue their preparations.
