No casualty recorded as two-storey building collapses in Sokoto

A two-storey building under construction collapsed in Sokoto metropolis on Wednesday, but emergency officials and witnesses reported no casualty.

The incident happened around Bauchi Road in the Unguwar Rogo/Mabera area. Daily Post, citing the National Emergency Management Agency’s Sokoto office, reported that 15 construction workers were on the site and all escaped without injury.

Vanguard reported that the structure collapsed at about 2pm after workers and passers-by had begun leaving the area because the building showed signs of instability.

NEMA said it received a distress call at about 2:23pm and deployed its search and rescue team. Other responders included Sokoto SEMA, the fire service, police, the Nigerian Red Cross, the NSCDC, urban planning officials and engineers.

One eyewitness, a carpenter identified by Vanguard as Bello Shehu, said he had come down from the upper floor for afternoon prayers before bystanders noticed signs that the structure could give way.
