Sixth Batch Of Nigerian Returnees From South Africa Arrives In Lagos

Another group of Nigerian returnees from South Africa has arrived in Lagos, with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission saying the sixth batch has now reached 1,174 people.

The latest group, made up of 40 returnees, arrived at the Lagos airport on Friday night on a chartered flight, according to NiDCOM’s statement reported by Channels Television.

NiDCOM said earlier returnees in the batch came through Air Peace flights carrying 258, 266, 262 and 282 people, as well as a Value Jet flight with 66 people.

The commission said the returnees thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving their evacuation and also acknowledged the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Nigeria’s Acting Ambassador to South Africa, Temitope Alexander-Ajayi; and NiDCOM chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

Government agencies including NEMA, the Refugees Commission, the Nigerian Immigration Service, FAAN, NIMC and security agencies were on hand to document and receive the returnees.

NiDCOM also said some returnees received support from state governments, private organisations and individuals, including cash support, SIM packs, accommodation and empowerment pledges.

The report said returnees from Imo State received ₦1 million each through Governor Hope Uzodimma, while Edo and Delta officials also announced incentives for their citizens.
