Nigeria issues safety alert after ninth woman found dead in South Africa

Nigerians living around parts of Johannesburg have been urged to stay alert after South African police recovered the body of a ninth woman east of the city.

The latest body was found in Dawn Park, while police also tightened security around Kempton Park in Ekurhuleni after three partially naked bodies were discovered earlier in the week.

South African police offered a 400,000 rand reward, about $25,000, for information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible. Punch reported that Deputy Police Chief Tebello Mosikili said officers could not keep “picking up bodies” while speaking to journalists in Dawn Park.

The Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg issued a safety advisory to Nigerians in the affected areas. The warning followed concern over the string of deaths and called for caution while police continued their investigation.

Vanguard also reported the ninth death in the South Africa killing spree, citing the police lockdown and search for suspects. The reports did not identify any Nigerian victim among the women found dead.
