Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after leading the country’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.
Shettima left Abuja on September 20 and delivered Tinubu’s national statement during the General Debate. In the address, Nigeria renewed its call for reforms at the United Nations Security Council, including permanent African representation, fairer global financing, stronger climate support and deeper multilateral cooperation.
During the trip, Shettima also attended the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, where Tinubu urged African countries to process, manufacture and add value to minerals instead of exporting raw materials alone.
He also held engagements including meetings with the new leadership of the ECOWAS Commission and United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, and met Nigerians in the diaspora, whose investment, expertise and networks he said remain important to national development.
