Motorists using the First Niger Bridge will wait longer for the bridge to reopen after heavy rain disrupted repair work on the Onitsha-Asaba crossing.

The bridge had been closed from September 7 to September 21 for emergency maintenance by the Federal Ministry of Works. The repair timetable has now slipped by about one week, leaving traffic pressure on the Second Niger Bridge and other diversion routes.

The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra State, Timothy Emenike, linked the delay to persistent rainfall, with Channels TV reporting that some repaired sections were affected by the weather. Punch reported that commuters have faced longer travel times and higher transport costs since the closure began.

Officials appealed for patience from motorists and said a short spell of dry weather would help workers finish the remaining parts of the job before the bridge is returned to traffic.
