Retired officers of the Nigeria Police Force have launched an indefinite protest in Abuja, demanding a total exit from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). The retirees, who have spent decades in service, claim the current system is a failure that has left them in extreme hardship.

“We No Go Gree”

The mood in Abuja on Monday, April 20, was one of desperation and anger. Protesters marched toward the Presidential Villa and the Force Headquarters, chanting “We no gree, we no go gree.” For many of these men and women, this isn’t just about a policy change; it’s about survival. One protester was filmed telling active-duty officers that they are simply fighting for their rights after 35 years of service.

The Demand for the Police Exit Bill

The core of the grievance is the CPS, which the Police Retired Officers Forum says has failed to provide adequate welfare. They are calling on President Bola Tinubu to sign the Police Exit Bill into law, which would allow them to move away from the contributory system and receive more stable, adequate pension payments.

The protest is set to continue indefinitely. It is a stark reminder that while the government focuses on new security initiatives, the people who previously held the line are now struggling to put food on the table.
