Plateau Cholera Cases Rise To 441 As Death Toll Hits 14

Plateau State has recorded 441 suspected cholera cases and 14 deaths in a worsening outbreak that began in June, according to new figures from the state government.

The latest update is a sharp rise from an earlier stage of the outbreak, which NaijaTrend reported here when five deaths and 11 confirmed cases had been recorded.

Health Commissioner Dr Nicholas Ba’amlong said the suspected cases were reported in Mangu, Jos North, Jos South and Barkin Ladi local government areas. Vanguard reported 26 confirmed infections. Daily Trust reported that the state had 20 positive rapid diagnostic test cases and six culture-confirmed cases across 25 wards and 107 settlements.

The commissioner said only three patients remained on admission, all in Jos North, while response teams continued work in affected councils with support from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and other partners.

The state said it had stepped up emergency response measures, community sensitisation and hygiene campaigns through traditional rulers, religious leaders and local influencers. Residents were urged to report symptoms early and use safe water, especially in affected communities.
