Police say six people were killed in an attack on Gero community in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, while community representatives report seven deaths.

Plateau police spokesperson Alfred Alabo gave the lower toll in a statement reported by Channels Television. He said armed men entered the community early on Tuesday and opened fire.

One injured person was taken to hospital, and joint security teams began searches around the surrounding hills, Alabo said. Police reported recovering motorcycles and other items allegedly abandoned by the attackers.

Berom Youth Moulders Association spokesperson Rwang Tengwong told Channels Television that seven people died when gunmen attacked shops and relaxation spots around 9.30pm on Monday.

Resident Bot Silas separately told Daily Trust that seven people were killed, placing the attack at about 10.20pm. The community is called Georo in that report.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang said on Tuesday that investigators had recovered evidence and were pursuing leads. He spoke during the swearing-in of special advisers in Jos.

Alabo said Police Commissioner Ayodeji Faniyan visited the community on Tuesday and met local representatives. Search operations and investigations were continuing; the differing casualty totals and attack times had not been reconciled.
