Former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has warned about chemical use in fresh produce after saying a laboratory test found his wife’s freshly squeezed orange juice unfit for human consumption.

Osinbajo said Dolapo Osinbajo had switched from carbonated drinks to daily fresh orange juice, but later began having unexplained headaches. He said she eventually sent a sample of the juice for laboratory analysis.

The former vice-president spoke at the Open Day for Gardeners’ Seminar in Lagos on August 28. A video of the remarks was later uploaded to his YouTube channel and drew wider attention over the weekend.

Osinbajo did not disclose the substance found in the tested sample or provide details of the laboratory report. He used the account to warn about the alleged use of chemicals to ripen, preserve or protect fruits and vegetables.

He specifically mentioned calcium carbide, which is sometimes used to force fruit to ripen, and cited studies on chemical use by some fruit and vegetable sellers. The warning comes amid recurring public health concerns over food handling and informal produce markets.
