Ogun Issues Fresh Flood Alert Ahead Of September Rains

The Ogun State Government has warned residents in flood-prone communities to stay alert and move to safer areas where necessary as heavier September rains approach.

The warning followed a Nigeria Meteorological Agency forecast that listed Ogun among states expected to experience heavy rainfall in the second phase of the 2026 rainy season.

Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya said the first phase of the rainy season, from mid-March to July, brought intense rainfall and isolated flash floods, but the impact was limited compared with the level of rain recorded.

He linked the reduced impact to public awareness, river and drainage maintenance, and waste-management work by the state government.

Oresanya said attention had been given to waterways including Sokori River and its tributaries, Opa-Aro, Adiyan, Eruwuru, Yemule, Gbogidi Canal and Ijamido rivers and streams.

The state expects intense rainfall averaging about 360mm in September. Inland rainfall is expected to decline from October into early November, while southern communities along the Ogun-Osun River Basin may continue to receive rainfall into December because of their closeness to the coast.

The government urged residents in vulnerable areas to avoid blocked drains, stop dumping refuse in waterways and relocate temporarily where flooding risk becomes high.
