NNPCL Raises Petrol Price to ₦1,320/Litre as Marketers Sell Up to ₦1,444
Nigerians woke up to higher fuel prices on Workers’ Day. NNPCL has raised the pump price of petrol to ₦1,320 per litre in Lagos and Abuja — and across much of the country, independent marketers are already selling between ₦1,364 and ₦1,444 per litre, with some stations hitting ₦1,440.
The price increase follows NNPCL’s decision to raise its Official Selling Prices (OSPs) for all 37 Nigerian crude oil grades for May, with average increases of around $6–7 per barrel, citing global market conditions. The adjustment flows directly into pump prices nationwide.
The Numbers
At NNPCL-operated stations, the new official pump price in Lagos and Abuja stands at ₦1,320 per litre — up from ₦1,185 at the start of April. Independent filling stations in the same cities are selling at ₦1,364 to ₦1,400. In states outside Lagos and Abuja, prices at independent marketers range up to ₦1,444 per litre. Some areas are already seeing ₦1,440 on the board.
NNPCL raised crude prices across all 37 grades as part of its monthly OSP review. Bonny Light — Nigeria’s benchmark crude — saw one of the steeper increases. Guardian reported that the global oil rally deepened the upward pressure, with fears of supply tightening contributing to the pricing decision.
Cost of Living Impact
The fuel price hike lands on an already stretched consumer base. Transport costs will rise across the board — logistics, food distribution, and the informal economy all feel fuel price increases almost immediately. The hike comes on the same day that labour unions were demanding higher wages and Tinubu himself declared poverty a national emergency. The contradiction was not lost on Nigerians online.
