The Nigeria Immigration Service has confirmed that one of its officers was killed and another seriously injured when armed men attacked their patrol in Niger State on October 6.

The two officers, attached to the Wawa Control Post, were on routine surveillance along the Tunga Taya–Woro axis when they were attacked at about 11.30am, the service said in a statement issued on Thursday, October 15.

The deceased officer was identified as ASI I.U. Babangida. His colleague, Inspector A.K. Musa, escaped with serious injuries and was receiving medical attention, according to the statement.

NIS spokesperson Akinsola Akinlabi said Babangida had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites. The service offered condolences to his family and colleagues and pledged support for both officers’ families.

The service said it was working with the Niger State Government and other security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible.
