Nigeria and Türkiye have struck a defence agreement that will see 200 Nigerian Special Forces personnel deployed for advanced training in Türkiye, with plans for a new military training facility back home.

The deal was sealed at the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF2026), where Defence Minister Gen Christopher Musa (retd) held talks with Turkish officials on deepening security cooperation between the two countries.

200 soldiers heading to Türkiye

The immediate takeaway is the deployment of 200 Special Forces personnel for training in Türkiye. Gen Musa confirmed the agreement, saying: “Türkiye has agreed to give us 200 Special Forces trainees, so as soon as I return, we are sending them here for training.”

The training is expected to cover counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism tactics — areas where Türkiye has built considerable expertise through years of operations against armed groups.

More than just training

The partnership goes deeper than sending soldiers abroad. Both countries have agreed to co-produce defence equipment, which could give Nigeria a foothold in military manufacturing. There are also plans to establish a dedicated military training facility in Nigeria, meaning the knowledge gained in Türkiye can be passed on to more troops without the cost and logistics of flying them out every time.

For a country fighting insurgencies on multiple fronts — from Boko Haram in the northeast to banditry across the northwest — this kind of capacity building is long overdue. The question now is whether the political will exists to follow through.
