The Nigerian Communications Commission has launched an Internet Governance Working Group to continue discussions on online safety, artificial intelligence and other digital policy issues beyond its inaugural symposium.

The group was launched at the NCC Internet Governance Symposium in Lagos on Thursday, October 15. Daily Post reported that it was established as a continuing platform to identify practical priorities and coordinate action on issues affecting Nigeria’s digital environment.

Abraham Oshadami, the commission’s Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, delivered the opening address on behalf of Executive Vice Chairman Aminu Maida. He said internet decisions affected people’s opportunities, security, trust and rights, not just connectivity.

Oshadami said the growth of artificial intelligence was changing how people learned, worked and accessed services, while raising concerns about harmful content, fraud, privacy, accountability and child protection. He called for cooperation beyond the communications sector, saying no single institution could address those challenges alone.

He cited the Internet Code of Practice 2026 as a framework for a safer online environment, but said its effectiveness would depend on clear expectations, engagement with affected groups and consistent implementation.

Oshadami also pointed to the Cyber Resilience Framework for the Nigeria Communication Sector, which seeks to strengthen the security of infrastructure supporting digital services.
