Police in Bauchi State have arrested two people over the deaths of a 6-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl in separate incidents in Alkaleri and Ganjuwa local government areas.
Command spokesperson Nafi'u Habib announced the arrests on Monday, describing separate investigations into the two deaths.
In the Alkaleri case, police alleged that the boy became ill after drinking a beverage given to him by his stepmother in Kwaimawa community. He began vomiting and was taken to the community's primary health centre before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe.
Habib said the child died on 24 October after eight days of treatment. Police arrested the woman following a report by the village head, and she remained in custody while investigators examined the circumstances of the death.
In the Ganjuwa case, a girl who had been reported missing was found dead in a pit on the morning of 24 October. Police from Soro Division secured the scene and arrested a man in connection with her death, Habib said.
The reports differ on the precise village where the girl was found. Punch places the discovery in Badaromo, while Daily Trust identifies the incident with Zaila and says she had stayed with relatives in both villages.
Habib said both cases had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation.
