The Ogun chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students has given the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, 24 hours to explain a nursing student’s death, warning that it could mobilise a protest at the Abeokuta facility.

The hospital says it has begun investigating the death, which occurred while the student was receiving treatment at its General Medical Practice Unit. It has asked the public to allow the investigation to proceed.

The student, identified by Daily Trust as Taiwo Godwin Ayodeji, was enrolled in the hospital’s Post-Basic Nursing programme.

In a statement issued on Saturday, October 17, NANS Ogun Joint Campus Committee chairman Faruq Olabode demanded an explanation of the care the student received before his death, according to Punch.

The association called for an independent investigation and an autopsy review to establish the cause of death and whether any failure in care contributed. It said any review should involve qualified professionals, appropriate consent and compliance with the law.

NANS also asked medical regulators, the Nigerian Medical Association and security agencies to investigate, and appealed to Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare Iziaq Adekunle Salako to intervene.

In its own Saturday statement, the hospital said its investigation was ongoing and would follow established procedures. It promised a thorough and impartial inquiry into the circumstances of the death.
