NAFDAC has seized two tankers meant for edible vegetable oil after they were found carrying diesel in Lagos.

The agency said the vehicles were designated for food-grade transport but had been loaded with Automotive Gas Oil, a practice it warned could contaminate food products and endanger consumers.

Daily Post reported that NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Martins Iluyomade, said the tankers and their drivers had been taken into custody while investigations continue.

The seizure came about three months after the agency warned transporters against using the same tankers for petroleum products and edible oil. NAFDAC said tankers assigned to edible vegetable oil must be used only for that purpose.

Iluyomade said investigators were looking into the extent of the violation and the regulatory action to follow. He also said one tanker manager claimed not to know about the colour-coding system for edible oil tankers.

NAFDAC said its rules prohibit using food-grade tankers for petroleum products because of contamination risks. The agency said its investigation was continuing.
