The federal government has conditionally approved development of King Amachree Airport at Elem Ifoko, in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development conveyed the decision in a letter dated 26 October to Royal Fouche Services Limited, according to Vanguard’s account of the letter and The Sun.
The approval is subject to 11 conditions, including an airport master plan and compliance with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), environmental requirements and statutory fees.
Vanguard reported that the ministry requested an engineering assessment of a canal crossing the site, with options including diversion, realignment or a bridge. It also required studies of flooding, tidal movements and drainage.
The developer must assess soil and groundwater conditions, provide reliable all-weather road access, and submit topographical, obstacle and meteorological studies. The ministry and its agencies are to maintain technical oversight throughout development.
The letter followed a ministerial team’s site assessment from 2 to 4 September. Royal Fouche executive director Tonye Princewill said the pace of work would not override due process.
The ministry forwarded the approval to the NCAA and directed the developer to work with the authority on implementation.
