Mary Habila Family Petitions IGP, Demands Release Of Body For Burial
Mary Habila’s family has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, asking him to order the release of her body for burial and move the investigation into her death to Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The petition marks another turn in a case that has drawn public attention since Habila died on June 27 in Ebonyi State. NaijaTrend earlier reported here that her family had fixed a burial date while police insisted on an autopsy.
Daily Post reported that the July 17 petition was submitted through K.A. Yusuf & Associates. The family said it had made several applications and visits seeking the release of Habila’s remains but had not received approval from the Ebonyi State Police Command.
Premium Times reported that Habila, who was attached to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, died at a private residence in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Her remains have since been in police custody.
The family’s lawyer said relatives had met police requirements for the release of the body. The petition also asks the IGP to take over the case so the investigation can proceed outside the state command.
