Lookman Fires Atletico Madrid Into Champions League Semi-Final Despite Loss to Barcelona
Ademola Lookman scored the goal that sent Atletico Madrid into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, despite a 2-1 second-leg defeat to Barcelona at the Metropolitano on Tuesday night.
Barcelona, trailing 2-0 from last week’s first leg, came out fast. Lamine Yamal opened the scoring inside five minutes, and Ferran Torres levelled the tie on aggregate with a fine strike around the 24th minute. For a stretch, the visitors looked capable of adding a third.
But Atletico responded quickly. Marcos Llorente broke down the right flank and delivered a precise cross for Lookman, who finished calmly to restore his side’s aggregate advantage. That goal in the 31st minute turned out to be the decisive moment of the entire tie, which ended 3-2 to Atletico on aggregate.
From there, Diego Simeone’s side did what they do best: defend with everything. Barcelona pressed and pressed, thought they had levelled again when Torres volleyed home, only for VAR to rule it out for offside. Then Eric Garcia was sent off late, and even with 10 men Barcelona kept coming. In the 96th minute, Ronald Araujo headed over from close range when an equaliser would have forced extra time. It was that close.
Oliseh’s reaction
Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh was full of praise. “Talk about being an absolute influential player! I am extremely happy for Lookman. His goal made the difference. He is also showing so much maturity that is quite remarkable,” Oliseh posted on X.
It is high praise from someone who knows what performing on the biggest stage looks like, and it captures exactly what makes Lookman’s season notable: not just the goals, but the timing.
The bigger picture
Lookman has six goals since joining Atletico in January. His Champions League run is a bright spot in a season where Nigerian football has had more downs than ups. A Nigerian player starring for one of Europe’s elite clubs in the latter stages of the continent’s premier competition is exactly the kind of visibility the Super Eagles need as they rebuild under Eric Chelle.
Atletico Madrid advance to the semi-finals for the first time in nine years. For Lookman, the journey continues.
