Lagos Taskforce Arrests 50 During April Sanitation Exercise
The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit swept through multiple city hotspots during the April monthly sanitation exercise, arresting over 50 people accused of disturbing public peace and threatening public infrastructure.
Taskforce spokesman Raheem Gbadeyan confirmed that the enforcement covered areas known for recurring violations — Ikeja, Iyana-Ipaja, Abule-Egba, Agege, Iyana-Oworo, Lagos Island, and the Lekki–Ajah corridor. The bulk of arrests were made along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, where suspects were linked to vandalism of billboards and road signage during the restriction period.
Taskforce chairman Mr Adetayo Akerele confirmed all suspects would be charged to court. “Some suspects were implicated in acts threatening public infrastructure, including billboards and road signage. All suspects will be charged to court accordingly,” he said.
Zero Tolerance
Lagos State’s monthly environmental sanitation restricts vehicular movement and commercial activity on the last Saturday of each month, typically from 7:00am to 10:00am. Officials reported significant compliance from residents overall, with active resistance concentrated in specific areas.
The taskforce maintains a zero-tolerance stance, routing arrests directly to Lagos State Mobile Courts. For anyone still treating the restriction as optional — this month’s sweep is a reminder of the consequences.
