Lagos seals 14 properties over alleged sewage discharge and wastewater violations
The Lagos State Government has sealed 14 properties across six areas over alleged discharge of untreated sewage into public drains and other wastewater management violations.
The affected properties are in Ikotun, Ikoyi, Isheri-Osun, Lagos Island, Ikorodu and Amuwo-Odofin. The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office carried out the enforcement following public complaints, routine monitoring and investigations.
In a government statement reported by Daily Post, the office said the properties were releasing untreated sewage from septic tanks and other wastewater systems into drains, ongoing drainage works and surrounding areas.
General Manager Adefemi Afolabi said the violations included broken or dilapidated sewer chambers, illegally connected sewer pipes and the deliberate pumping of septic tank contents into public drainage channels.
He said these practices caused foul odour, faecal contamination and environmental nuisance, and could put public health at risk. The agency would continue responding to credible complaints wherever its investigations established violations, he added.
Afolabi said the exercise was not directed at any particular location or category of property. He urged owners, residents, facility managers and businesses to ensure wastewater was properly contained, treated and disposed of through approved channels.
The office asked residents to report suspected illegal wastewater discharge so its officers could investigate and address violations.
