Lagos Arrests Suspect Over Threats To Widow After Husband’s Death
A suspect has been arrested in Lagos after a widow alleged that members of her late husband’s family threatened her, assaulted her and tried to take over property belonging to her and her children.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said it acted after reports emerged on Tuesday about the woman’s ordeal in Ikorodu. Punch identified the widow as 28-year-old Tosin, while Premium Times reported that the agency withheld her full identity.
The case drew public attention after activist Harrison Gwamnishu shared a video which he said showed the woman’s father-in-law padlocking the gate of the property and locking her out. The reports said the woman’s husband died on July 20.
The agency said it contacted the widow, who alleged threats to her life, physical assault and intimidation after her husband’s death. It added that she had already reported the matter to the Owutu Police Division.
According to the DSVA, police officers handling the case confirmed that the alleged perpetrator had been arrested and remained in custody while investigation continued.
The agency said the Lagos State Government would provide support and work with the police to ensure the widow and her children are protected.
