INEC is reviewing 268 voter records flagged for suspected AI-generated photographs or other irregularities as it cleans up its preliminary register ahead of the 2027 elections.
The commission’s director of information and communication technology, Lawrence Bayode, gave the figure during Channels Television’s Sunday Politics interview.
Bayode said genuine photographs enhanced by AI tools on mobile phones would not automatically disqualify voters. He distinguished those images from photographs generated entirely by AI, which he said would be removed.
The commission’s Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) flagged the records for examination. Bayode said some people allegedly exploited a special registration option intended for people with incomplete fingers or no fingers to create questionable profiles.
The disclosure adds a specific count to INEC’s earlier explanation of its voter-register cleanup. The 268 are records under review, not a confirmed tally of fraudulent voters.
INEC says verification, adjudication and corrections must be completed before the final voter register is certified on 15 December.
