Ijaw, Itsekiri Agree Power-Sharing Deal for Warri Federal Constituency II
Representatives of the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities in Delta State have reached a power-sharing agreement for the proposed Warri Federal Constituency II.
The agreement followed a meeting held at the Office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja and chaired by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
Daily Trust and Channels TV reported that the deal is aimed at easing tension over the electoral ward delineation dispute in the Warri area. The meeting came after President Bola Tinubu hosted representatives of the Ijaw, Itsekiri and Urhobo ethnic nationalities at the Presidential Villa on June 11.
NaijaTrend earlier reported Tompolo’s intervention in the Warri delineation crisis here.
Under the new arrangement, the House of Representatives seat in the proposed Warri Federal Constituency II will rotate between the Ijaw and Itsekiri groups. The Ijaw nationality is expected to hold the seat for the first two consecutive terms before it rotates to the Itsekiri nationality for another two terms.
The agreement was signed by representatives from both groups and endorsed on behalf of the Federal Government by Ribadu. The meeting also had senior security officials in attendance, including the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Oluwatosin Ajayi.
The breakthrough is expected to reduce tension linked to the proposed delineation exercise and give the affected communities a clearer framework for political representation.
