State governors are facing mounting criticism as widespread insecurity threatens basic education for over 52 million Nigerian pupils, with members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) staging protests demanding urgent federal action.

The protests, which have spread across multiple states, were triggered by a series of school abductions in Oyo and Borno states, where over 80 pupils and teachers were kidnapped from their schools.

The Guardian reports that the crisis has exposed significant gaps in the security architecture protecting educational institutions, with many schools in rural areas lacking basic security infrastructure.

The NUT has accused governors of failing to prioritise the safety of schools despite repeated warnings about the vulnerability of educational institutions to attacks by armed groups.

Parents and community leaders have joined the protests, expressing frustration over the slow pace of rescue efforts and what they describe as government indifference to the plight of abducted children and teachers.

The protests have drawn attention to the broader impact of insecurity on Nigeria’s education sector, with thousands of children already out of school in regions affected by banditry and insurgency.

Education experts warn that the sustained attacks on schools could have long-term consequences for human capital development, potentially worsening an already precarious educational situation in which millions of Nigerian children are already out of school.

The Federal Government has responded by deploying specialised security units and approving the recruitment of forest guards, but protesters argue that more comprehensive measures are needed to secure schools nationwide.
