The Gombe State Government has declared a cholera outbreak in Todi Ward, Billiri Local Government Area, saying 74 patients had received treatment and been discharged by Wednesday, October 21.

Health Commissioner Adamu-Danladi Bojude said no patient remained on admission at the time of his briefing and that the state had recorded seven consecutive days without a new case. He said the outbreak could be declared over on October 24 if no further case was reported.

Bojude said the declaration followed reports of diarrhoea and vomiting in Kedo village that claimed two lives on October 4.

Bojude said a Rapid Response Team had been deployed to support local health officials with investigation and free treatment at the Primary Health Centre in Sheila.

He said an Incident Management System had also been activated at the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate surveillance, case detection and response.

The commissioner said an annual prevention programme, run with the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency and other partners since 2023, covered more than 150 identified cholera hotspots across the state’s 11 local government areas.

He urged residents to maintain food, personal and environmental hygiene and report suspected cases promptly to the nearest health facility. Treatment for suspected cholera cases would be free, he said.
