The husband of Nigeria’s Ebola patient is in isolation but has shown no symptoms, Switzerland’s foreign ministry says. The woman is a Swiss national and the wife of an employee at the Swiss embassy in Abuja.
The couple travelled together to Uganda. The ministry said neither had visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo, adding a Swiss government account to the investigation into where the woman became infected.
The woman has been receiving treatment at a private clinic in Abuja for about a week, according to the ministry’s statement reported by Channels Television and Daily Post on Friday, October 23. Switzerland believes she may have contracted the virus during the Uganda trip; that remains an assessment, not an established source of infection.
Channels Television reported that the ministry said the embassy’s 25 other staff members, comprising eight Swiss nationals and 17 local employees, were doing well. Following consultations with Nigeria’s health ministry and the World Health Organization, they did not need to isolate, the statement said.
The account does not settle the disputed travel history. Punch reported that Ugandan officials said the woman had travelled to eastern DRC, while the WHO and Africa CDC said they had not received verified information confirming such a visit.
NaijaTrend previously reported on the investigation and WHO’s assessment of the outbreak here. The ministry also said Switzerland was considering the patient’s possible repatriation.
