Fuel Imports Rose 207% In June As Domestic Supply Fell, NMDPRA Data Shows

Nigeria’s petrol imports rose sharply in June as domestic supply dropped, according to figures from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

The June fact sheet showed that average daily Premium Motor Spirit imports climbed to 18.1 million litres per day from about 5.6 million to 5.9 million litres per day in May, a rise of roughly 207 per cent.

Domestic PMS receipts fell from 41.5 million litres per day in May to 32.5 million litres per day in June. Punch put the decline at 9 million litres per day, or 21.7 per cent, while Daily Post reported it as a 22 per cent drop in Dangote Refinery production.

Total PMS receipts still rose to 50.6 million litres per day in June, up from 47.4 million litres per day in May, as higher imports offset the fall in domestic supply.

The data also showed changes in other fuel products. Daily Post reported that diesel imports were not recorded for the period, while cooking gas consumption and imports rose as domestic LPG production declined.
