Vice President Kashim Shettima meets transporters at the State House

Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that the Federal Government is set to roll out 10,000 electric tricycles in August 2026, aiming to modernise public transport and lower costs for commuters.

The announcement came during a visit by members of “Transporters for Tinubu and Shettima 2027” at the Presidential Villa. According to a State House statement, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) will lead the first phase of the deployment before the project is expanded to other regions through their respective development commissions.

Shettima framed the move as part of a larger shift toward cleaner energy and a more integrated logistics network. He noted that the goal is to move away from a fragmented system and create a seamless link between ports, railways, roads, and airports to drive economic growth.

The Vice President also pointed to the success of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (PCNGI) initiative, noting that CNG trucks are already proving sceptics wrong by significantly cutting fuel costs for operators.

While the ambition is high, the real test will be the pricing and availability of charging infrastructure, as well as whether small-scale operators can access these vehicles without falling into a debt trap.
