FG Opens Consultations On National Water Compact For Sector Reforms

The Federal Government has begun consultations on a National Water Compact aimed at addressing Nigeria’s water and sanitation problems over the next four years.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, presented the first draft of the 2026 to 2030 compact at a stakeholders’ consultation workshop in Abuja. The document is meant to guide reforms in water supply, sanitation, irrigation and wider water security.

Daily Trust reported that the ministry unveiled the draft as a response to weak infrastructure, rapid urbanisation, population growth, climate pressure and financing gaps. Punch also reported the same nationwide consultation, saying the government was working with states and other stakeholders to shape the compact.

Utsev said the challenges have continued to limit Nigeria’s ability to provide reliable water supply, sanitation services and productive water use. The draft compact is built around three broad areas: water for people, water for food security and water for the planet.

The ministry said stronger coordination between federal, state and local authorities, development partners, the private sector and communities would be needed if the reforms are to move beyond planning into delivery.
