The federal government has approved a N70,000 monthly transport allowance for public servants for six months from November, following talks with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja.
The NLC published the signed resolutions from Tuesday’s conciliation meeting, chaired by Labour and Employment Minister Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, with NLC President Joe Ajaero leading the union delegation.
The intervention covers workers across all levels. State and local governments were urged to join the intervention process; the agreement does not say they have already adopted it.
Payment of outstanding peculiar allowances, effective from 1 May, is also due to begin in November in three equal monthly instalments. Separately, 19 months of health workers’ allowance arrears are to be paid over three months from December.
The parties agreed to set up a minimum wage negotiation committee and begin meetings immediately, but did not agree on the effective implementation date.
The talks follow the NLC’s earlier demand for lower petrol prices and fresh wage negotiations. The transport payment is an allowance, not an agreed replacement for the national minimum wage.
The government and unions agreed to reconvene after one month to assess implementation.
