The Nigeria Labour Congress in the Federal Capital Territory has suspended its indefinite strike and directed affected workers, particularly teachers, to resume work on Wednesday, October 21.
The suspension follows talks over teachers’ promotions, the 2025 promotion examination and the redeployment of senior education officers. The union warned that the strike would resume without further notice if the agreed resolutions were not implemented.
A communiqué reported by Daily Trust said the FCT council’s State Executive Council adopted the suspension after consultations and reconciliation meetings with the administration.
Under the resolutions, promotion vacancies for education officers would be based on established positions declared by the Education Secretariat. The union said expected retirements among directorate staff would create room for other officers to advance.
A new date for the 2025 promotion examination would be announced to enable eligible candidates to sit for it, the council said.
The proposed redeployment of officers covered by the harmonised retirement age for teachers back to classroom duties was put on hold pending further directives, according to the communiqué.
The strike began on October 7 over unresolved promotion and career-progression grievances. The NLC and Nigeria Union of Teachers subsequently rejected a no-work-no-pay directive and told members to remain on strike. NaijaTrend reported that position here.
The FCT NLC said it would establish a monitoring committee to track implementation of the resolutions within the agreed timelines.
