El-Rufai Back in Court as ICPC Opposes Fresh Bail Application in N10.8bn CCTV Case
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai appeared in court on Wednesday as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission formally opposed his latest bail application in the N10.8 billion CCTV fraud case.
The Charges
The ICPC filed fresh criminal charges against el-Rufai and seven others over an alleged N10.8 billion fraud linked to a CCTV surveillance project during his tenure as Kaduna governor. The commission arraigned el-Rufai on multiple counts, with proceedings becoming more complex as the agency separated trials across different courts.
The ICPC has updated that in one court, a bail ruling was adjourned, while another court granted conditional bail in parallel proceedings. It is a legal maze that has kept the former governor in a state of ongoing uncertainty since his arrest.
Tension in Court
Reports from Legit.ng described notable tension during Wednesday’s proceedings as el-Rufai appeared to face the fresh charges. The ICPC’s opposition to bail signals the commission is not inclined to make his pretrial period comfortable — a stance that reflects how seriously the agency is treating the allegations.
Context
El-Rufai was one of the most high-profile APC figures before his falling out with the Tinubu administration and his eventual defection. His legal troubles have significantly curtailed his political visibility, even as he maintains that the charges against him are politically motivated.
The N10.8 billion CCTV project was a Kaduna State government contract intended to build a surveillance network for the state. Prosecutors allege the funds were fraudulently disbursed, with inflated contracts and diversions. El-Rufai has consistently denied wrongdoing.
