D’Tigress Fall 89-63 to LA Sparks in Historic US Tour Opener
Nigeria’s D’Tigress opened their United States tour with an 89-63 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks at Viejas Arena in San Diego on Saturday. The scoreline told the story of a young squad still finding its feet against seasoned WNBA opposition in what was the first meeting between an African national team and a WNBA franchise.
D’Tigress never led. Los Angeles jumped out to a 27-17 first-quarter advantage and pushed it to 44-29 by halftime. The gap widened to 32 points in the third quarter before the Sparks closed out a routine win. The shooting numbers were stark: the Sparks connected at 49.2 percent from the field against Nigeria’s 37.0 percent, and from three-point range the gap was even wider at 35.5 percent to 16.7 percent.
A squad in transition
The game was always going to be a steep test. Head coach Rena Wakama is absent due to her WNBA commitments with the Chicago Sky, leaving assistant Wani Muganguzi in charge. The 21-player training camp roster is dominated by young players from American college programmes, with 15 drawn from 14 different NCAA schools. Maryland guard Oluchi Okananwa is emerging as a central figure in the team’s evolving identity, joined by newcomers Stephanie Okechukwu, Shay Ijiwoye, Nora Ezike, Uche Izoje, and Danielle Osho.
Several players did not see game time. Suzie Rafiu, Regina Donanu, Jerni Kiaku, and Vera Ojenuwa were all unused as the coaching staff rotated personnel to assess combinations. But the roster still features experienced internationals including Ezinne Kalu, Promise Amukamara, Victoria Macaulay, Nicole Enabosi, and Pallas Kunayi-Akpanah.
Building toward Berlin
The tour is part of preparations for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, where Nigeria will compete in Group B alongside France, South Korea, and Hungary. Nigeria’s 24 turnovers against the Sparks led directly to 26 points for the hosts, and the team recorded just 14 assists compared to Los Angeles’ 25.
D’Tigress face the Minnesota Lynx next at 1am Nigerian time on Tuesday, with the coaching staff looking for better ball security and more cohesion on both ends of the floor. The results in the US matter less than the lessons. This is a team assembling itself in real time.
