The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 204 pump-action rifles at Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.

The weapons were smuggled into the country from Turkey and discovered during cargo checks at the port, according to the service.

Customs said the seizure followed another August interception involving firearm components that were assembled into 399 pump-action rifles and handed over to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons.

The service said the latest case showed why it was tightening checks on cargo coming through Nigerian ports as security agencies continue to warn about illegal firearms.
