Cooking Gas Prices Hit N1,600–N1,700/kg as Depots Run Dry, Nigerians Turn to Charcoal
Retail prices of liquefied petroleum gas (cooking gas) have surged to between N1,600 and N1,700 per kilogram across Nigeria amid severe supply shortages, with depots running dry and many Nigerians forced to switch to charcoal and firewood.
The price spike follows supply adjustments by Dangote Refinery and other producers. Legit.ng reported that cooking gas prices have hit a new high per kilogram as depots run dry across the country.
BusinessDay confirmed that prices have hit N1,500 per kg in Lagos alone, while Brand Spur reported marketers warning of growing public anger as prices push toward N1,700 per kg in some areas.
The surge represents a steep jump from the N1,500 per kg level reported just weeks ago, reflecting worsening supply conditions. The shortage has pushed many lower-income households back to charcoal and firewood for cooking, raising concerns about health risks from indoor air pollution and deforestation.
Industry analysts point to reduced imports, production adjustments at the Dangote Refinery, and distribution bottlenecks as factors driving the supply crunch.
