Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has sworn in 68 lawyers as Senior Advocates of Nigeria, warning that the rank does not exempt its holders from professional accountability.
The ceremony took place at the Supreme Court in Abuja on Monday during the special session opening the 2026/2027 Legal Year. The recipients comprise 67 advocates and one academic, Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri.
Kekere-Ekun asked the new senior advocates to uphold integrity and act as examples for younger lawyers. She said professional success should be accompanied by humility and ethical conduct.
Channels Television reported that she referred to disciplinary action taken against senior members of the profession during the preceding legal year as a reminder that rank is no substitute for ethical behaviour.
The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee approved the recipients at its 174th plenary session in Abuja on July 23, 2026, under the CJN’s chairmanship.
The committee required the successful applicants to complete an induction programme before the swearing-in. It also warned against advertisements and congratulatory notices relating to their nomination or conferment, in line with professional guidelines.
