CBN Says Currency In Circulation Rose To N5.73tn As FX Inflows Hit $109.86bn
The Central Bank of Nigeria says currency in circulation rose to N5.73 trillion in 2025, up from N5.44 trillion in 2024.
The bank linked the increase to faster economic activity and higher demand for cash, according to figures in its 2025 Annual Report and Statement of Accounts.
Premium Times reported that the CBN approved 5.71 billion pieces of banknotes across different denominations for 2025. That was a 20.5 per cent increase from the 4.74 billion pieces approved in 2024.
The report said 35 per cent of the printing allocation went to the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc, while 65 per cent went to foreign high-security printers.
Aggregate foreign exchange inflows rose to $109.86 billion in 2025 from $96.53 billion a year earlier. The CBN said the increase came mainly from autonomous sources rather than official channels.
Foreign exchange inflows through autonomous sources rose by 25.12 per cent to $70.54 billion, accounting for 64.21 per cent of total inflows. The bank linked the growth to stronger non-oil export receipts, over-the-counter purchases and higher capital importation.
The report also put aggregate FX outflow at $49.05 billion, up 27.83 per cent from $38.37 billion.
