The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has asked the Federal Government and the National Assembly to stop work on the proposed Foreign Aids Regulation, Transparency and Disclosure Bill 2026.

The bishops said the bill could hurt churches, mosques, schools and humanitarian organisations that support vulnerable people and communities affected by conflict.

Punch and Vanguard reported that the bishops accepted the need for transparency, but warned that provisions requiring registration of foreign aid resources and government supervision of their use could go too far.

The bishops said religious bodies, other non-profit organisations and incorporated trustees are already regulated by the Corporate Affairs Commission under the Companies and Allied Matters Act and other laws.

They also linked their objection to wider concerns about insecurity, poverty, poor infrastructure and governance challenges, saying the country needs support systems that can reach communities in need without unnecessary restrictions.
