A youth leader, Sunday Ogoh, has been killed after armed men attacked Ondo community in Ugboju district, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

Police confirmed the attack, which happened in the early hours of Tuesday. The traditional head of the community and other residents were wounded and taken to hospital.

Benue police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet said the command received a distress call at about 6:10am that gunmen had attacked Ondo, Ugboju. She said tactical teams, senior officers, vigilantes, civil protection guards and other security agencies were deployed to the area.

Daily Trust reported that residents said the attackers invaded around 5am and shot repeatedly. The report said many residents fled their homes after the incident.

Maxwell Ogiri, chairman of Otukpo LGA, said security operatives repelled the attack, but one indigene had already been killed. He said a manhunt had begun for the attackers.

The incident came barely 48 hours after another attack in Otukpo-Nobi community, also in Otukpo LGA, where 18 people were reported killed.
