Police in Bauchi State have arrested a 20-year-old man over the alleged sexual assault of a seven-year-old girl and the theft of two mobile phones in Darazo Local Government Area.

The command said the case was reported on September 6 by the girl’s father, a 37-year-old resident of Kari village in Darazo.

According to the police, the girl was on her way to a neighbour’s house with two Tecno A31 Android phones when the suspect allegedly lured her into an uncompleted building, stole the phones and sexually assaulted her.

Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Habib said detectives arrested the suspect with the phones after receiving the complaint. The police said the child and the suspect were taken to Darazo General Hospital for medical examination.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the matter be transferred to the Gender Laboratory of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation.

The command said the suspect would be charged in court after the investigation is completed. It also urged parents and guardians to pay close attention to the movement and safety of children.
