Average Petrol Price Hits N1,532 Per Litre as NBS Reports 18.97% Monthly Increase
The average retail price of petrol in Nigeria rose to N1,532.93 per litre in April 2026, reflecting a significant 18.97 per cent increase from the N1,288.54 recorded in March, the National Bureau of Statistics has reported.
Year-on-year, the price surged 23.69 per cent from the N1,239.33 recorded in April 2025, underscoring the persistent upward pressure on fuel costs since the removal of the petrol subsidy.
Regional Variations
The NBS data showed Yobe State recorded the highest average price at N1,599.05 per litre, while Niger State had the lowest at N1,403.89. By zone, the South-South region recorded the highest average at N1,566.76, while the North-West had the lowest at N1,508.81.
Cooking Gas Prices Also Rise
The NBS report also revealed that the average price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas — cooking gas — rose sharply. A 12.5-kilogram cylinder now costs N22,382.20, up 13.89 per cent month-on-month, while a 5-kilogram cylinder sells for N8,706.93. Katsina State recorded the highest price for the 12.5kg cylinder at N25,596.71.
The persistent rise in fuel and energy costs continues to strain household budgets across the country, compounding food inflation pressures that have pushed the headline inflation rate above 30 per cent.
