Abia Demands Probe Into Killing Of Nigerian By South African Police
Abia State has demanded an investigation into the death of Chika Ibe, an Abia-born Nigerian who was allegedly killed by South African police officers in Cape Town.
The state government said Ibe, from Lokpaukwu in Umunneochi Local Government Area, died during a police operation on July 23. It called for a swift investigation and prosecution of anyone found responsible.
The state-level demand follows wider concern over Ibe’s death. NaijaTrend earlier reported the federal request for a probe here.
Premium Times reported that the demand was contained in a statement issued by Ferdinand Ekeoma, media aide to Governor Alex Otti. Punch also reported the statement and said the government received news of the killing with shock and sadness.
The reports said videos circulating online appeared to show officers assaulting Ibe before one officer allegedly covered his face. Premium Times reported that Ibe could be heard pleading and saying he was dying before his movement slowed.
The Abia government said the incident had deepened concern over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa. It urged Nigerian and South African authorities to ensure justice and protect citizens from abuse.
Otti also commiserated with Ibe’s family and prayed for comfort for them, according to Punch.
