Nigeria Seeks Probe After Citizen Dies In South African Police Operation

Nigeria has demanded a full investigation after Ibeh Chika Simon, a Nigerian national, died during a South African Police Service operation in Bellville, Cape Town.

The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg said the circumstances of Simon’s death were questionable. It also raised concern over Egwabor Patrick Chuks, another Nigerian who was shot during the July 23 operation and was receiving treatment for severe injuries.

The latest case adds to months of concern over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa. NaijaTrend earlier reported here that the Federal Government had sought justice after two other Nigerians were killed in separate incidents in June.

Premium Times reported that the Johannesburg consulate identified Simon as the latest Nigerian to die in South Africa during the current wave of anti-foreigner tension. It said the consulate linked the death to a police operation and confirmed that Egwabor Patrick was also shot.

Punch reported that the consulate had called for an independent and transparent probe, including proper preservation of evidence and accountability for any officers found responsible. The consulate also urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant while the matter is pursued through official channels.

No final finding has been announced on the Bellville operation. South African authorities had not released the outcome of any investigation at the time of the reports.
