The Presidency says President Bola Tinubu’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly will not reduce Nigeria’s diplomatic standing.

The explanation came after the Presidency announced that Vice President Kashim Shettima would lead Nigeria’s delegation to New York. It is Tinubu’s third consecutive absence from the UN gathering since he became president.

Premium Times reported that Ademola Osodi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Protocol, said the President was focused on domestic issues and that Nigeria’s role in African and global affairs would not be weakened by his absence.

Daily Trust also reported the third consecutive absence and noted earlier expectations that Tinubu would attend. Channels Television reported Osodi’s argument that Nigeria’s influence was not tied to one appearance at the UN, as the country remains active in several regional and global groups.

The explanation follows criticism from political opponents who asked the Presidency to say why Tinubu would not attend. Shettima is expected to lead the Nigerian delegation, which includes governors and federal ministers.
